This is the first in our instalment of 10 things to do, to inspire you to spend a break away in the Midlands this year.
#1 of 10 things to do in Leicestershire
Number 1 on our list is: Walk up to Old John.
We suggest that you walk up Old John to Old John Tower, one of Leicestershire’s most famous landmarks. Old John is the name of the highest hill in Leicestershire on the edge of the Charnwood Forest and on top is an old folly – Old John Tower!
Situated in Bradgate Park it’s only a 20-30 min drive from Trinity Marinas so makes a perfect day trip from the marina if you are staying on the Ashby Canal for a few nights.
The hill on which Old John stands has the most amazing views of Leicestershire and is well worth the walk. It is 690 ft above sea level and is Leicestershire’s 2nd highest point. The highest point in Leicestershire is Bardon Hill, which is an old volcano. As you wander through the park you’ll see lots of wildlife including the parks deer population. A day out here makes a perfect picnicking spot for the whole family to enjoy.
